Matthew Stafford established a new standard for longevity in franchise history on Sunday when he surpassed the all-time passing touchdown record for the Los Angeles Rams. In doing so, he became the first player to hold the passing score record for multiple active NFL teams.
The milestone occurred in the second quarter of the Rams' 35-21 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Stafford connected with wide receiver Puka Nacua on an 11-yard touchdown pass, marking his 155th scoring throw in a Rams uniform. That total moved him past Roman Gabriel, who recorded 154 passing touchdowns in 130 games with the club.
Stafford also claimed the second-most career completions in franchise history during the same game. He finished with 1,851 completions, passing former quarterback Jim Everett, who recorded 1,846. The Rams acquired Stafford after the 2020 season in a trade that sent quarterback Jared Goff back to the Lions along with multiple first-round picks. Since then, Stafford has played in 81 games for Los Angeles.
Prior to joining the Rams, Stafford spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Detroit Lions. He remains the franchise leader for that team with 282 career passing touchdowns. Stafford acknowledged the dual nature of holding records for both franchises, noting that his name appears on the boards for both clubs.
"It's pretty cool," Stafford said. "It just means you're old, and you've played a lot of ball and wore yourself thin enough at a certain place where they moved on." He emphasized that the achievement belongs to the entire offensive unit. "Throwing touchdowns isn't a one-man job," he stated. "Takes a lot of people to block and get open and coaches to draw up plays."
All three of Stafford's touchdown passes came in the first half, a performance that ties his career high for any single half. His 79% completion rate was his highest in a game since 2018. For the contest, he completed 23 of 29 passes for 195 yards while throwing one interception.
For the 2026 season, Stafford has completed 67.3% of his passes for 1,989 yards across seven games. He has thrown for 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions this year. "It's been a heck of a ride," Stafford said. "Enjoy doing what I do, still love it, and look forward to doing some more."
