Questions regarding the commercial availability of Tesla's autonomous vehicle program have persisted for several months, but the company has now provided a timeline for when the public may access the technology.
During the company's third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 21, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy stated that the company is working to deliver units before the close of the calendar year. "We're trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026," Moravy said, confirming a definitive date for the transaction.
However, the release of these vehicles to customers is subject to significant operational prioritization. According to Moravy, while production is active at Gigafactory Texas, every unit currently manufactured is being allocated to the internal Robotaxi service. As operational scale increases, the company intends to deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to customers, with the Cybercab serving as the primary example.
Initial distribution to buyers will be limited in volume as the company establishes procedures for logistics, fleet management, and the supervision of autonomous operation outside its direct control. This approach aligns with comments from CEO Elon Musk, who characterized the Cybercab as a transport-as-a-service offering rather than a personal ownership vehicle comparable to the Model 3 or Model Y. "The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be Tesla-owned and transport-as-a-service," Musk said.
The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle that operates without a steering wheel or pedals, relying entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite. Manufacturing of the vehicle commenced in February, and early units were deployed to the Robotaxi service for public rides starting in early September. The company has previously indicated an intention to price the vehicle at approximately $30,000.
Regarding the capabilities of the vehicles, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI, indicated that unsupervised Full Self-Driving capabilities are expected to ship to consumer cars in the second quarter of 2027.
Significant regulatory hurdles remain before deliveries to customers can proceed. Early buyers or fleet operators may receive vehicles whose autonomous operation is restricted to specific geographic areas due to the pace of regulatory approvals in various jurisdictions.
