OpenAI's Latest Fundraising Push: A Trillion-Dollar Question
The AI powerhouse is reportedly pursuing a new, massive round of private capital at a valuation that would set new records.

The path to a public debut for one of Silicon Valley's most prominent companies may be getting longer.
According to sources, OpenAI is currently negotiating a new round of private financing that could see it raise as much as $30 billion. The proposed valuation for this funding would be $1.25 trillion, calculated before the new investment is added. This effort is reportedly being led by Coatue and investors from the UAE. It is important to note that these figures are still under negotiation and could be adjusted before any deal is finalized, and a previous report from a month ago had mentioned a higher potential valuation of $1.4 trillion. OpenAI has not commented on the matter.
The timing of this potential deal raises questions about the company's future plans. In June, OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering, a step that typically precedes a listing on a stock exchange. However, this new report suggests the company is instead opting to secure more private capital. If the proposed $1.25 trillion valuation is confirmed, it would make OpenAI the most highly valued private company ever, surpassing any previous record for a pre-IPO entity. Such a figure would also set a significantly higher starting point for its future public offering, coming after a funding round in March that valued the company at $852 billion.
The situation with OpenAI is not happening in a vacuum. Another leading AI firm, Anthropic, is also preparing for a public debut and has filed its own confidential paperwork in June. Reports indicate Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its IPO, a figure that would exceed what OpenAI is reportedly seeking in this private round. Anthropic last raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, a deal many observers at the time believed would be its final private funding before going public. The competing valuation figures between the two companies highlight the intense competition for capital and market position.
The stakes are high for both companies and their potential investors. The funding round under discussion involves significant capital, with sources indicating it could be coupled with an agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the UAE. For OpenAI, securing such a valuation would be a major milestone, establishing a new benchmark for private company worth. For Anthropic, its own IPO plans could be directly influenced by the valuation OpenAI is able to secure. The outcome of these negotiations will be closely watched as both companies navigate the transition from private funding to the public markets.
