Federal agents have taken a seventeen-year-old into custody after identifying a specific plan to target a sitting member of Congress in North Texas.
The suspect was apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 5, according to campaign officials. The congressman’s team was notified of the detention on October 6 by U.S. Capitol Police. Investigators indicated that the minor had been under federal surveillance due to signs of radicalization. The team was informed that the teen was allegedly coordinating a terrorist act on behalf of ISIS. The primary objective was to strike during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event featured former professional football players and other high-profile attendees. The identity of the suspect remains under wraps while the investigation proceeds.
Representative Keith Self, the Republican representing Texas’ third congressional district, is currently seeking a third term in office. He confirmed to local media that the situation warranted an immediate adjustment to his security protocols. Self noted that his background in military service informed his reaction to the news. He stated that his prior deployments to combat zones allowed him to remain composed rather than panicked. He emphasized the importance of determining if the suspect was acting as a lone wolf. His wife, who served as a military spouse for twenty-five years, also regarded the threat with serious consideration. Self acknowledged that he had received threats in the past, but this was the first instance where the concern escalated to an arrest.
Despite the heightened security posture, the congressman attended the scheduled fundraiser as planned. He participated in judging nineteen different chilies and three varieties of beans. The event concluded without incident. Self has maintained his campaign schedule, including recent poll greeting sessions. He stated that the alleged plot would not deter him from communicating his political message to voters. His opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, also issued a statement condemning the planned attack on social media.
The incident highlights the broader political context surrounding Self’s district. He has taken a prominent stance against Sharia law, introducing a nonbinding resolution in September to denounce its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This debate has gained traction in McKinney, which is part of his district. In August, the city council approved a site plan for a local mosque expansion. That decision followed hours of contentious public comment and was later followed by an effort to recall several council members. The convergence of these local issues and the federal investigation places significant attention on the upcoming election cycle.
